GREY – Sleeps 4 or more, with 1 x twin bedroom and 1 x double 4-poster bedroom with one large bathroom for all to share. Located in the heart of the ancient castle access is up two flights of stairs. The fine Elizabethan Long Gallery with its timbered ceiling has a magnificent early carved chimney piece over a wood burning stove and with superb garden views and some rooms also overlooking the great mediaeval courtyard. No children under 10 years of age. Some extra folding beds are acceptable.

LOOKOUT - Sleeps up to 5, with 1 twin-bed room, 1 double bed room and 1 small single bed room. There is one bathroom for all. From this high up apartment in the ancient castle, with its charming sitting room/kitchen, there are the finest views of the gardens and surrounding mountains. There are too many steps (35!) for the very elderly or infirm, and no children under 10 years of age to the Lookout. From this room the castle sentries of old looked out to assure peaceful action in the surrounding area.



LANDSEER - Sleeps up to 6, with 1 double-bed room, 1 twin bed room and one bath room on the ground floor plus a double sofa-bed in the living room. There is a detached kitchen/dining room with a large, handsome living room on the first floor which is furnished with engravings by Sir Edwin Landseer, the great artist who became a close friend to the castle and a frequent visitor.

DAIRY - Sleeps up to 6, with 1 double-bed and 1 twin bedroom plus bathroom on the ground floor. On the first floor there is a large living room with a double sofa bed and a kitchen/dining area. This apartment was converted from the old castle dairy and the bedrooms of the dairy maids. There are views over trees of the valley and also the burn which runs down from the lake.

 

TOWER - Sleeps up to 4, with 1 twin bedded room and 1 double sofa bed in the living room. There is one bath room and the kitchen is immediately off the living room. This apartment overlooks the courtyard and you can clearly see it is built right up against the ancient stones of the outside wall of the castle fortifications.



COURTYARD - Sleeps up to 6, with 1 double and 1 twin bed plus bathroom on the ground floor. On the first floor there is the fine high-timbered living room with space for 2 folding beds, with one end made over as the kitchen and dining area. The bedrooms are the most spacious and comfortable on the Valley side of the castle and they all look out on the courtyard, as does the large living room above.

 

THE GUARD ROOM– Sleeps 2, with 1 double bedroom. This very private apartment, with its own entry from the Valley Wing courtyard, has a small high beamed living room with a small kitchen wing attached. In these cosy rooms the relief watchmen slept, comfortably and in peace, awaiting their turn on guard

THE COACHING ROOMS – More scope and space here than in the Castle. Sleeps 7 (and more with folding beds.) with 2 x double bedrooms, one of which has a 4-poster bed, 1 single bedroom and 1 twin bedroom. In these rooms, friends stopping for a break from the fierce coaching routines would have rested from the exhaustions of the road. We have superb photographs of the coaches in high action. The building was re-designed in the 18th century by Paterson, a famous pupil of Robert Adam. The main living/dining room is high timbered and furnished with harness and the memorabilia of coaching days, and there is a separate kitchen

 

Each apartment has its own very individual character with many period features retained. Interesting antiques and works of art furnish these historic apartments.
Some rooms have views over the wooded valley and stream whilst others overlook the arched courtyard and parkland beyond.
